Designed by Rumi Li and a team of experts from Honeywell China Co Ltd and Shanghai LKK Innovation Design Group, the Air Touch stands out in the market with its unique properties. The design features a telescopic replace filter system, eliminating the need for dismantling the machine casing. Each filter corresponds to different colors and numbers, simplifying the replacement process. The design also boasts a simple and easy-to-use operation interface, with wind speed as the main operation area and a panel displaying three colors of light representing the three different layers of mesh.
The Air Touch was inspired by the need for a home-friendly air purifier with a great user experience and formidable purification ability. The designers sought to address common challenges in the market, such as the less than ideal purification effect of existing purifiers and the difficulty in replacing filters. They also aimed to design an operation interface that is extremely simple yet meets the user's needs.
The realization of the Air Touch design involved careful consideration of the appearance and functionality. The designers opted for a classic runway shape to suit home environments and used a cascading water ripple design for the air outlet. The side air inlet grille features a fine and orderly wire netting that echoes the air outlet. The front cover folds in a drawer-like manner, making filter replacement more convenient. The operation interface uses a touch-sensitive lump sum of money kneading board, providing a better user experience.
The Air Touch measures 550mm*209mm*422mm and weighs 5kg. It comes with a remote control for easy operation and an APP that allows users to easily purchase filters. The design was started in March 2014 in China and completed in November 2014. The target users are young white-collar workers who prefer a simple interface and touch-sensitive buttons for smooth operation. The operation panel lights not only serve as a decorative element but also display the current air quality.
The Air Touch design faced several challenges, including how to design a purifier that is suitable for home use, has a good user experience, and has formidable purification ability. The designers also had to figure out how to facilitate quick filter replacement and design a simple yet functional operation interface. Despite these challenges, the design was successfully realized and has received accolades, including the Platinum A' Home Appliances Design Award in 2015. This award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
